Alternative care consists of all formal and informal arrangements whereby a child is looked after at least overnight outside the parental home, either by decision of a judicial or administrative authority or duly accredited body, or at the initiative of the child, his/her parent(s) or primary caregivers, or spontaneously by a care provider in the absence of parents.

Care Planning

The process of planning a program of alternative care that has clear short-term and long-term goals. Care planning commences as soon as the need for a child to enter alternative care is identified. A care plan is written and outlines how the child’s developmental and cultural needs will be met and by whom. It ideally includes the views and wishes of the child and their family.
