Early intervention and prevention services refer to the provision of early support to children and their caregivers to prevent problems from occurring, or address them early to prevent them from worsening. They are often referred to as secondary services and are targeted towards children and families who are at risk of poor outcomes, including children who have developmental delays and disabilities.

HIV/AIDS

HIV/AIDs services support children who are HIV affected; which includes children who are HIV+ and children with HIV+ parents or caregivers. A range of services are required to adequately support children affected by HIV, including, health, economic, psychosocial services and, for some children, alternative care. HIV/AIDs can impact upon a family’s ability to care for children, particularly where there are barriers to access and adherence to treatment. This results in a higher risk of separation and recourse to alternative care for HIV affected children.
