Mental Health and Substance Abuse

Early intervention and prevention services refer to the provision of early support to children and their caregivers to prevent problems from occurring, or address them early to prevent them from worsening. They are often referred to as secondary services and are targeted towards children and families who are at risk of poor outcomes, including children who have developmental delays and disabilities.

Mental Health and Substance Abuse

Mental health services include the range of services provided to children or their caregivers, to promote emotional, psychological and social well-being. Services can include clinical and non-clinical services as well as specialised or supportive services, such as helplines run by NGOs. Mental health and substance abuse issues experienced by parents can impact upon parents’ and caregivers’ capacity to provide appropriate nurturing care to children. Therefore, these services are amongst the range of interventions that can improve children’s care, prevent separation and support family reunification.
