The judiciary and law enforcement are two branches of the criminal justice system. They play an important role in the protection of fundamental human rights, including child rights. Law enforcement is often called upon to respond to and investigate reports of child abuse. They may also be amongst those who are called to respond to separated children, particularly children found on the streets, abandoned, or on the move. The Judiciary is the system of courts responsible for administering justice. The courts intersect with children’s care in many ways, including as it relates to care orders, custody orders, guardianship, adoption and the sentencing of juvenile offenders.
